The SNP leader is set to argue that 'what is needed is not more bombing'

Speaking at the end of her party's conference in Aberdeen, the SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon was expected to commit her party to opposing air strikes in Syria.

UK motivation to use the armed forces "appears to be based on a need to do something rather than any real consideration of whether the action proposed will make a positive difference", she will say.

"What is needed is not more bombing but a renewed and intensive diplomatic initiative led by the UN."

While the speech was prepared to focus on policy for the SNP's Holyrood elections manifesto, Ms Sturgeon was also expected to accuse David Cameron of "playing fast and loose" with Britain's membership of the EU.

The SNP will "campaign positively" to keep Scotland and the UK in Europe, she will pledge.
