Tories lead Labour in poll

The Tories have moved ahead of Labour in the opinion polls in a sign of growing public disaffection with the Government and Tony Blair's handling of the Iraq crisis.

The Conservatives now have a two point lead over Labour, according to a YouGov poll for The Daily Telegraph, after trailing for 11 years. The Tory advantage is the first since 1992 - apart from a short-lived "blip" during the fuel crisis in September 2000 - and will boost morale in Iain Duncan Smith's team.

Tory support stands at 37 per cent, a rise of one point since the end of May, while Labour support has fallen two points to 35 per cent. The Liberal Democrats have nudged forward to 21 per cent.

Only 25 per cent of voters think the Government has proved honest and trustworthy, the poll shows.

The Prime Minister's personal reputation has also plummeted with 63 per cent now believing he has not been honest and trustworthy.
