Racial awareness training for judges

A pounds 1m project to train judges in racial awareness was given the go-ahead by Lord Mackay, the Lord Chancellor. 'It is absolutely central to a judge's job that he or she is not only fair but is also seen by fair-minded people to be fair,' he told senior judges.

Lord Mackay accepted the recommendations of the Judicial Studies Board that all judges should attend a residential racial awareness course.
