Sentences quashed
The High Court quashed 28- day sentences imposed by magistrates on an elderly couple of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, for failing to clear poll tax arrears. The court said Erewash borough council's attempts to jail Doris Smedburg, 80, and George Smedberg, 74, were unreasonable and unlawful, given their ages and ill-health.
