An industrial tribunal at Lantrisant, Gwent, ruled that the sacking of Glyn Hurley, 59, of Llantrisant, by the Staedler UK pencil factory, for smoking was fair. Smoke was detected by an alarm in the lavatories at the firm, where a smoking ban had been in force since 1989, setting warning lights flashing in the personnel manager's office, the tribunal was told.
