Survey of judges
Stephen Byers, Labour MP for Wallsend, urged a radical overhaul of judicial appointments after a survey of appointments to the House of Lords, Court of Appeal and High Court between 1989 and 1991. He said it showed that 77 per cent had gone to Oxford or Cambridge universities, 84 per cent had attended private schools and only one woman was appointed.
