Terrace razed
Fire destroyed a terrace of listed buildings in Marlborough, Wiltshire. Gary Watts, 30, a fireman, discovered the fire and evacuated 50 guests and staff from the Castle and Ball Hotel, where he had been running a disco. Salvage teams are trying to reclaim building materials from the terrace in the High Street, which was built with the proceeds of a nation-wide appeal after a fire in the 17th century that destroyed vitually the whole town.
