Labour took a Dudley council seat from the Tories in Sedgley ward, marking the first time the area of large privately owned houses has had a socialist councillor.

Sedgley is in the Parliamentary constituency of Dudley West, where a by-election is to follow the death of the Tory MP Dr John Blackburn.

The Labour victor, Derek Flavell, 57, said a lot of people switched to Labour because of sleaze.
