Alan Brownjohn was born in 1931, the first son in five generations not to be a printer. At Merton College, Oxford, he began to write poems seriously and founded a small magazine which ran for 11 numbers. He is the author of eight books of poems, including The Way You Tell Them: A Yarn Of The 90's (Andre Deutsch 1990), Collected Poems 1952-83 (Secker 1983), and Collected Poems 1952-86 (Hutchinson 1988). He was also chairman of the Poetry Society from 1982-88, and received the Cholmondeley Award for Poetry in 1979.
