Kathleen Jamie was born in Renfrewshire in 1962, grew up in Midlothian and studied Philosophy at Edinburgh University. At the age of 19, she won a Gregory Award, a year later published her first collection, and twice won Scottish Arts Council Book Awards. Her most recent collections include The Way We Live (Bloodaxe, 1987) and The Autonomous Region (Bloodaxe, 1993). This poem is from her new collection The Queen of Sheba (Bloodaxe), due out next month priced pounds 6.95.
