John Watkins was born in 1956 in Tredegar, Gwent, where he still lives. This poem appears in his first collection Wheels (self published in 1986) following the miners' strike two years earlier. Many of the poems in Wheels reflect issues connected with mining communities. His work has also appeared in Come into the Warm (1988) and Black Harvest (1992), both anthologies.
