John Updike was born in Pennsylvania in 1932. He is the author of 15 novels and won the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He has published six collections of poetry, including Hoping for a Hoopoe, and Telephone Poles. This poem was originally from Midpoint and Other Poems (Deutsch, 1969) and appears in his latest collection John Updike: Collected Poems 1953-1993 (Hamish Hamilton, pounds 20).
