William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) was a medical student at Pennsylvania University, and studied advanced paediatrics in Germany. He was awarded the American Academy of Poets Fellowship in 1956, the Pulitzer Prize for Pictures from Brueghel and other poems, and the National Institute and American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal in 1963. This poem is from Agenda: An Anthology 1959-1993, published by Carcanet at pounds 25.
