AN ARMED robber escaped with up to pounds 1m illion after holding up a security van yesterday today as it made a delivery at a post depot.

The man, wearing a black balaclava and blue overalls, fired a shot at two security guards when they arrived at about 7am at the Royal Mail depot in Angel Way, Romford, Essex, then snatched bags containing the money.

Scotland Yard said a 'substantial amount' of cash was taken - 'at least pounds 100,000 and possibly pounds 1m. Checks are being made to ascertain the exact amount.'

It said the Security Express van had two male guards. The robber, who may have had accomplices, had apparently entered the depot earlier. He approached the guards and fired the shot without causing injury.

Then he struck one of the guards on the head, possibly with his firearm, before grabbing the money and making off. The guard was treated for a superficial head wound.

Police appealed for witnesses and help in tracing a mustard-coloured vehicle seen outside the depot, possibly a Honda or Nissan car.
