A woman was last night in a stable condition in hospital after giving birth to a baby boy following a head-on road crash which claimed her husband's life. Eva Brister, 27, who was 31 weeks pregnant, had to be cut free from car wreckage by firefighters after the crash on the A1 in the Scottish Borders on Sunday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the Simpsons Maternity Pavilion in Edinburgh where she gave birth said that Mrs Brister and the baby were "stable". Mrs Brister was travelling with her husband Paul, 26, and her one-year-old daughter, Kaiga. The family, from Bedford, were driving north of Houndwood when the accident happened. Mr Brister died at the scene and Kaiga is in a "serious but stable condition" at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.
