Horn of Africa crisis three months on

Three months on from the declaration of famine in Somalia, the Horn of Africa continues to be gripped by the worst food crisis in twenty years.

Across the region, over 13 million people require assistance. After extreme drought it is ironic that the long awaited rains bring new threats from disease.

Britain was one of the first countries to respond to the crisis. To date, the British public have donated over £72 million to the DEC appeal and over three million people will benefit from UK-funded humanitarian programmes.

Whilst reaching people with emergency aid remains a priority, new focus is being given to how this level of crisis can be prevented.

In Kenya – one of the three countries worst affected by the food crisis – an innovative ‘safety nets’ programme is already providing some hope for the future to over 60,000 families.
