An American quiz show contestant's record-breaking winning streak, which started on 2 June, came to an end yesterday after 74 consecutive victories.

Ken Jennings won more than $2.5m (£1.3m) on Jeopardy but was beaten by Nancy Zerg, whose own daughter had asked for his autograph when they first met.

Mr Jennings's haul has made him the biggest winner in television game show history. While winning, he also built up cult status among fans.

The show was recorded in September but only broadcast on Tuesday.

"It's kind of like losing a job you've had all summer," Mr Jennings, a computer software engineer from Salt Lake City, said.

Having answered 2,881 questions, the 30-year-old will return to his "real life".
