Police find body of father suspected of horrific abuse after infant daughter’s death

The man's estranged wife is in jail on charges of abuse

New York City police have found the body of Mohammed Reza Torabi after a manhunt in the wake of his 13-month-old daughter’s death due to suspected abuse.

Mr Torabi was suspected of harming Eliana and her twin brother Kian after authorities found bruises, cracked bones, internal bleeding, and bite marks on both the children.

Police had been looking to speak to their father when he was found at the midtown Manhattan, Renaissance New York Hotel 57.

A coroner is still conducting an examination but police suspect Mr Torabi jumped from the rooftop of the hotel at some point on 5 October and fell to his death 14 stories below, just out of public view on a third-floor landing.

Police said he left no note.

The children’s mother, Tina Torabi, was estranged from her husband and lived in the borough of Queens with her five children.

Kian remains in hospital in critical condition and the three other children in the home, all under the age of six, have been taken away by social workers.

It remains unclear if the children have other family members with whom they can be placed.

The incident with Kian and Eliana was not an isolated one, according to child protective services authorities.

Police visited the home last year when Ms Torabi called the police, alleging domestic abuse from her husband.

Social workers were also alerted last year when doctors found opioids in both Kian and Eliana's newborn bloodstreams.

The city’s child welfare agency is determining if social workers missed signs and if the current situation could have been avoided.

The couple reportedly married in 2012 in Houston, Texas. It is unclear when they moved to the New York area.

Ms Torabi has been arrested on charges of child endangerment and assault. She will remain in jail until her scheduled court date on 26 October.
