The US public is hearing for the first time the voice of one of the men accused of attacking the Texas community centre – talking about his faith and how is offers protection to him from harm.

Elton Simpson, 30, a convert to Islam who was known to friends at his mosque in Phoenix, Arizona, as Ibrahim, is seen on the video, talking about how he prays five times a day.

“It provides armour for going into the real world,” he says on the video that was recorded to raise funds for the Islamic Community Centre of Phoenix.

“It protects you against the threat of Satan.”

Elton Simpson has been named as one of the two gunmen who attacked the Curtis Culwell Centre arena in Garland

Mr Simpson and his roommate Nadir Soofi have been accused of launching a failed gun attack on Sunday night on a community centre in Garland, Texas, that was hosting an exhibition of images of the Prophet Mohomed. A security guard and the two men were shot dead by police.

Isis has subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack.

Earlier this week, the head of Mr Simpson's mosque described him as a gentle person and said he was surprised by developments.

"Everyone I have spoken to cannot believe this," Usama Shami told CNN. "There was no indication that he carried these views."
