It’s one thing that a restaurant is so good that the likes of Amal Clooney and her husband George want to eat there.

But it’s another that the place is so cool that when the restaurant found it was full that evening, it refused to make an exception for the celebrity couple.

That appears to have been what happened recently at New York’s Carbone restaurant when Mr and Mrs Clooney, or else their staff, tried to book a table for the couple at 8.30pm on a Monday evening.

No, came the reply from the Greenwich Village establishment – no tables available. The couple’s employee then sought to get a table for a 9.30pm but there was still no space.

A spokesperson for Carbone did not respond to inquiries

“They tried to get reservations at 8:30pm, which was a no-go, so they tried 9:30pm,” a source told the New York Daily News. “It says a lot about New York restaurants - if a dining room is full, that’s the end of the story. They don’t care if you’re an A-lister or a regular - they treat everyone the same.”

The newspaper said that couple were able to taste Carbone’s Italian cuisine at a less busy hour.

This may, of course, be nothing more than a clever marketing strategy. After all lots of New York restaurants are frequented by celebrities; it takes somewhere special to turn them away.

Impossible to tell. The restaurant on Wednesday directed The Independent’s inquiries to a spokesperson who did not respond to inquiries.
