A man from Florida will spend the next 15 years in prison after killing his cross-dressing voodoo priest lover.

Malherbe Francois, 24, pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced for killing his 42-year-old lover in February 2013.

The Miami Herald reported that police said Beauglais Bazelais had invited the younger man, who was homeless at the time of their meeting, to live with him in his home.

Miami Dade police said Malherbe Francois killed the priest after an argument

Francois told police that Mr Bazelais drugged him before the first time they had sex.

On the morning before the shooting, Mr Baseless had gone to a cemetery in North Miami-Dade to “collect souls for a voodoo ceremony.” Francois was out on the streets.

While at the cemetery, Mr Bazelais called Francois demanding that he return to the home. When Francois did, Bazelais was there with another Haitian man “and a spirit.”

Later, Mr Bazelais called Francois a second time and the two became involved in an argument.

Although he could have claimed to have acted in self-defence, Francois this week accepted a plea deal, admitting to the murder of Mr Bazelais. He must serve must serve 15 years in prison on his conviction for second-degree murder.

The Haitian voodooo religion, which is often sensationalied in media reports, blends Catholic beliefs with the worship of African deities. In Haiti, and in other communities, it is part of every day life.
