Man arrested in New York over Drive-style video
A 30-year-old has been charged with reckless driving
A video reminiscent of the Ryan Gosling film Drive has landed a New Yorker in trouble.
The video, posted online under the title “Fastest Lap Around Manhattan 2013”, gives a driver's eye view of a car racing around the city's island borough in just over 24 minutes.
And on Friday police charged 30-year-old Christopher Adam Tang with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and other charges, accusing him of being the driver in the video - which was uploaded by a user called AfroDuckProduction.
They also seized his 2006 BMW Z4.
Filmed on 26 August and posted two days later, the video shows the blurring headlights and neon signs of urban roads romanticised in Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 film. Whoever made the video also spiced it up with a some electronic music.
A camera mounted on the dashboard shows the car travelling along the 26.4 mile loop, while stopping for six red lights.
According to a charge sheet seen by AP, Tang claimed he never went over 100mph and ran only one red light at a pedestrian crosswalk.
He appeared in a Manhattan court on Friday but did not enter a plea. As he was led away following his arrest, Tang told reporters: "I'll comment later."
