A cashier in Colorado avoided a robbery on Tuesday after a would-be thief recognised the worker and decided not to go through with the crime.

The incident took place in Wheat Ridge in Jefferson County and the Sheriff's Office released CCTV footage of the bizarre moment at a Quick Save convenience store.

The video shows the hooded suspect entering the store around noon. According to the cashier, the man looked at him and said, "(Expletive), I was going to rob this place but I know you."

He then asked whether the cashier knew who he was, but the clerk had no idea. The would-be robber replied, "Good", before leaving the store while giving the baffled cashier the thumbs up.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the suspect left in a grey or silver four-door sedan with purple-tinted windows and no visible licence plates. The man was wearing a blue hoodie, bandana and jeans.

While the cashier at the Quick Save was lucky, a 7-Eleven store was robbed soon after by a man fitting the same description.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said that anyone with information regarding this crime should call the tip line at 303-271-5612.
