Two people have been shot in Ferguson after a confrontation between protesters and police at an event marking the first anniversary of the death of a black teenager Michael Brown.

Footage has emerged from the city in which a series of shots can be heard being fired near a convenience store with people screaming and running for cover.

St Louis County police say they came under fire with two unmarked police cars being hit by gunshots.

After a day of peaceful rallies to mark the shooting of the teenager by a white policeman which lead to a series of riots last summer, the scene changed dramatically with dozens of protesters blocking traffic and smashing store windows.

The status of the two shooting victims is currently unknown but a body was seen lying on the street and a young woman was seen screaming that her brother had been shot.
