A mother in Canada mother has given birth to twin daughters who not only have different birthdays, but were born in different years.

Lindsay Salgueiro delivered one baby at the Mississauga Credit Valley Hospital in Ontario on New Year’s Eve, 2013, before giving birth to another child just eight minutes later on New Year’s Day, 2014.

"They are getting all the attention," Ms Salgueiro told CTV News from her hospital bed, and joked that having her daughter's birthdays on separate days will be the "golden ticket" to ensure they will be "best friends for life".

Ms Salgueiro was not due to give birth until 19 January, but went into labour on Tuesday, giving birth to Gabriela just before midnight at 11.52pm. Baby Sophia was then born 38 seconds after midnight on 1 January, 2014.

She said doctors at the hospital had expected Gabriela and Sophia to both be born before the New Year chimed in. "When Gabriela had come out they were trying to get Sophia out in 2013 so they would be the same year, but the position Sophia was in wouldn't allow her to come out."

Ms Salgueiro said her daughters were "healthy and doing well". "Our New Years are never going to be the same again", she added.
