A New York tabloid has hit back at criticism of its front page condemning American politicians’ attitudes to gun control - with another front page sarcastically proclaiming “everything is awesome”.

The New York Daily News' latest front page features kittens and puppies in an attempt to mock those “who have been offended by hearing the truth about our nation’s gun scourge and the NRA and cowardly pols (sic) who think nothing’s wrong”.

Last week the newspaper ran a front page condemning Republican politicians’ prayers the day after a couple killed 14 people in a gun attack on a disability centre in San Bernardino, California.

It highlighted the tweets of presidential candidates Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, South Carolina Governor Lindsey Graham and Speaker Paul Ryan who all said their prayers were with the victims and their families saying “God isn’t fixing this”.

It is the latest in a string of front pages condemning the political power of the NRA - National Rifle Association - and political leaders' continued reluctance to introduce gun control measures.

But the front page was condemned by many who said it was “offensive”.

The tabloid has been noted for its opposition to lack gun control across the US with its coverage of past shootings using headlines such as “Same gun different slay”, “Blood on your hands” and “Gutless cowards”.
