Woman holding one-year-old daughter falls to her death in New York subway station

Authorities say the 22-year-old mother was carrying her baby in a pushchair when she fell down a flight of stairs

A woman died after falling down a flight of stairs inside a Manhattan subway station while holding her one-year-old daughter, authorities said.

Malaysia Goodson, a 22-year-old woman from Stamford, Connecticut, passed away after the fall on Monday night, though the official cause of her death is still pending confirmation from the medical examiner.

The toddler, who Ms Goodson was carrying in a pushchair, was reportedly unharmed during the fall and was treated at the scene.

Ms Goodson fell inside the Seventh Avenue B-D-E station in New York City at about 8pm on Monday night, the Associated Press reported.

She was found unconcious and rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

There is no elevator at the station where Ms Goodson fell on Monday night. Mothers carrying pushchairs are often forced to take the stairs, as the Seventh Avenue/53rd Street station only has an escalator going up that is not suitable for strollers or larger objects.

Some of the details surrounding the fall were not immediately clear, including whether Ms Goodson was pushing the pushchair with her toddler inside of it, or if she was carrying the pushchair at the time of the incident.

Authorities later confirmed the mother had her one-year-old child safely secured in the pushchair in her hands when she was found at the scene.

Subway riders who noticed Ms Goodson rushed to the station agent and said someone had fallen, the agent told the New York Daily News.

The station agent then contacted supervisors, who reportedly called the police.

Ms Goodson was pronounced dead shortly after at the Mt Sinai West Hospital on Monday night.
