Two people have been reported dead at North Lake College in Texas, after police reported an active gunman on campus.

James Mclellan of the Irving Police Department told reporters that officers had found the body of a suspect and one possible victim deceased in a building on campus. Irving police confirmed via Twitter that the suspect had committed suicide.

No one else on campus was injured, Mr Mclellan told The Independent. Police have not identified the suspect or victim.

The Irving Police Department issued a tweet earlier in the day saying there was an active shooter on campus, and advised residents to steer clear of the area. Police and SWAT team officers responded to the scene. A message on the school's Facebook page instructed students to proceed to the nearest room and barricade themselves inside.

"Wait in place for further instructions from police," the school instructed students. "If you are not on campus, STAY AWAY for your own safety."

The police had received an initial, unconfirmed description of the suspect as a white male with brown hair, wearing a white tank top.

Local news station NBC DWF reported police conducted a systematic search for the shooter through all buildings on campus. Mr Clellan told The Independent that officers located the suspect's and victim's bodies within about 30 minutes of receiving the first 911 call.

Officers continued their sweep after finding the two bodies. The school administration ordered the campus closed for the remainder of the day.

Nearby University of Texas at Austin was rocked by violence just days before, when a stabber killed one and possibly injured three.

North Lake College is a two-year public community college in Irving, Texas. It is part of the Dallas County Community College District and had an enrolment of 11,365 as of 2011.
