Police rescue child after shootout with his father

A dramatic video released by Oregon police has shown officers rescuing a child from a car after a car chase and shootout that broke out in Klamath County last month.

Police posted the footage of an incident that took place on 10 April that left one state trooper injured and the suspect dead. The child involved was not harmed during the ordeal.

In the video, police can be seen tailing a vehicle until it is forced to a stop. Shots from both the diver and law enforcement can be heard.

Later in the footage, an officer is seen carrying the child from a vehicle and moving quickly away from the scene.

Images of the aftermath of the incident show holes where a number of bullets pierced the front of the state trooper's windscreen.

The suspect was said to have fired at least 36 rounds at officers before being hit by return fire. He was reportedly in possession of 10 fully-loaded magazines and more than 250 rounds of ammunition.

The incident began when police responded to a domestic disturbance that reported an “intoxicated man was trying to take his children,” authorities said in a press release.

By the time officers arrived at the residence the man had reportedly already left the scene.

An Oregon State Police Trooper began tailing a man in a car that matched a description provided by officers. State police were involved when the vehicle made attempts to get away.

When a spike strip brought the car to a stop, “the driver exited the vehicle and fired numerous shots at the officers," according to the release. Police said law enforcement returned the fire.

“I don’t think I’m alone when I admit my heart skipped a beat when I first viewed this video,” Oregon State Superintendent Travis Hampton told ABC News affiliate KDRV.

A letter from the grand jury assigned to review the shooting says that it determined the use of deadly force by an OSP trooper and KCSO deputy was justified.

“I credit the professionalism and remarkable bravery of the Oregon State Police Troopers and Klamath County Deputy Sheriffs that brought this violent event to end,” Mr Hampton said of the incident.
