Pensioner attempts to drive out of car park, smashes into ten cars

The 92-year-old man got his foot stuck on the accelerator - and the rest was pure parking pandemonium

This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home...and this pensioner at the Piggly Wiggly car park smashed into ten cars as he tried to leave.

In a scene reminiscent of the infamous Maureen Rees on Driving School, footage from the Piggly Wiggly shopping centre in Mayville, Wisconsin shows a 92-year-old driver struggling to manoeuvre his minivan out of the car park and promptly smashing into ten other vehicles as he finally manages to leave, just about in one piece.

Video shows the man reverse out of his space slowly but then speeding straight into the back of one car, forcing two other vehicles out of position. He reverses - again at speed – into a 4x4, pushing the vehicle and the other one parked beside it out of place.

He then zooms around, knocking the bumper off another car (victim number six) as he careers into the side of a red pickup truck and hits another car head on. The driver of the pickup truck can be seen running out of his vehicle and chasing the pensioner out of screen shot.

In a statement from authorities, the Mayville police, fire and emergency medical services were called to the scene on Friday 13 February, clearly an unlucky day for ten cars in particular.

The pensioner gets his foot stuck on the accelerator and crashes into three cars.

He then reverses into the back of two more.

He knocks the bumper of another parked car as he leaves.

Kerr, 92, then crashes into the side of a red pickup truck.

However, while police said the crash was under investigation, local ABC affiliate WISN12News reported on Monday that authorities now considered the incident an accident and the pensioner would not be charged.

"I can tell you in 23 years of law enforcement, I've never seen anything like this," Mayville Police Chief Christopher MacNeill told WISN12News.

MacNeill confirmed that - miraculously - no one was hurt in the car park, and that he initially thought the driver might be trying to escape the police or it was a case of road rage.

However, he explained that the driver, 92-year-old Russell Kerr, simply panicked.

"His foot got stuck on the accelerator, and from that point, he panicked and lost control of his vehicle," MacNeill said.

Police cannot take away Kerr's licence but the report on the incident has been sent to the Department of Motor Vehicle, which can determine if Kerr needs to be retested.
