For more than two decades it featured on the music of some of the world's best known musicians. John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and David Bowie all turned to the specially adapted "tack piano" at New York's Record Plant studios for its percussive sound. Now the piano is up for sale by the memorabilia dealer Gary Zimet, the asking price a cool $475,000 (£250,000).

"It's a piece of musical history, said Mr Zimet, who operates momentsintime.com website - which recently asked $6m for "Robert Johnson's" guitar. Also on offer is the Double Fantasy album autographed by Lennon for Mark Chapman just hours before Chapman shot him dead outside his apartment - as John and Yoko returned from Record Plant studios.
