George Zimmerman back in jail

George Zimmerman, the neighbourhood watch volunteer charged in the Florida killing of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, returned to jail yesterday after a court revoked his bond and ordered him back into custody.

Mr Zimmerman, pictured, who had been freed on a $150,000 (£97,500) bond and was hiding in an undisclosed location, arrived at the Sanford County jail shortly before the 48-hour deadline imposed by Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester Jr on Friday.

The prosecution said Mr Zimmerman had claimed at a bond hearing in April that he was penniless, but in fact had $135,000 in his defence fund.

He was also found to own a second US passport, which he had not surrendered, leading prosecutors to state he was a flight risk.

His lawyer, Mark O'Mara, told reporters Mr Zimmerman, 28, was "frustrated" at having to return to jail. Mr Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, is charged with killing 17-year-old Mr Martin on 26 February as he walked through a gated community in Sanford where he was staying with his father.
