A 14-year-old girl died after she was electrocuted while trying to charge her phone in the bath.

Madison Coe, was having a bath at her home in Lovington, New Mexico, when her phone accidentally fell into the bath.

Her grandmother told KCBD she was found with a "burn mark" on her hand where she "would have grabbed the phone".

Donna O'Guinn said: “She was very smart. Very good student in school. She just loved life.

“She was just sweet to everybody and everybody loved her."

The teenager had recently graduated from Terra Vista Middle School, where she was a member of the school band and played basketball.

In a statement, the school said: “It is with heavy hearts that Frenship Independent School District mourns the loss of Madison Coe.

"We wish to share our heartfelt sympathy with her family and friends as we carry the burden of this tragedy together."

Now, Madison's friends and family hope to raise awareness about the dangers of using mobile phones in the bath through Facebook.

Friends launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for her funeral.

"Our hearts go out to their family during this difficult time," the page said.
