A 15-year-old girl who performed at President Barack Obama's inauguration in Washington was killed on Tuesday in a daylight shooting at a park in Chicago's notorious South Side.
Hadiya Pendleton was murdered a week after appearing as a majorette in the King College Prep School drill team at the inauguration. Police said it was unlikely she was the intended target. Gang members were in the park but she was not a gang member. A 16-year-old boy was also shot, but survived.
Chicago's homicide rate reached 506 in 2012. Forty murders had already been reported in Mr Obama's home town this month before Tuesday's shooting.
