Donald Trump says Ted Cruz ‘hates New York’ after losing to his rival in Wisconsin

'Lyin' Ted! Lyin' Ted!' By now, his supporters know the refrain and echo the words back to him

“It’s very nice to be home again,” said Ivanka Trump as she welcomed her father to the stage in New York.

Donald Trump’s daughter, who gave birth to her son Theodore less than one week ago, said the rally was “just too important” to miss.

It was one night after the Republican had lost out to his rival Ted Cruz, 48.2 per cent versus 35.1 per cent, in the key state of Wisconsin.

“He will work tirelessly for you,” his daughter assured the crowd in Bethpage, Long Island.

The audience was then shown a video, set to the background of a violin concerto. The first face on screen was that of Fox News host Megyn Kelly, his “foe”, who questioned him on his insulting remarks towards women. It also showed his supporters, including a Colombian woman who Mr Trump brought on stage at a rally in Las Vegas to hysterically scream his name.

Then the real Mr Trump appeared, and echoed his daughter’s words as his children watched from the side of the stage.

“It’s great to be home. We love New York,” he said, adding that he had often flown to Bethpage at 2am to play a round of golf.

“I love the Mexican people. I love Hispanics. I love Hispanics. They are unbelievable people,” he added, a preface for his speech on bringing companies and jobs “back to the United States”.

“We are going to build that wall along the border,” he said, moving his right hand down in a wiggly line as if to draw the “border”.

“It will be a real wall. It will be a real wall. Are you ready? Are you ready? Are you ready? Who is going to pay for the wall?”

“Mexico!” the audience shouted back. “Build that wall! Build that wall!”

Mr Trump lost no time in moving on to attack Texas Senator Ted Cruz, to whom he lost out in Wisconsin the previous evening. He claimed Mr Cruz “could not draw a crowd of 100 people” in Mr Trump's home state.

“Do you remember during the debate when he started lecturing me on New York values like we’re no good? Like we’re no good? And I stated talking about the World Trade Center and the incredible bravery of everybody, of the police, our firemen, our everybody—“ he paused. “Better believe it.”

“We all lived through it, we all know people that died and I’ve got this guy standing over there, looking at me, talking about New York values, with scorn on his face, with hatred of New York. So, folks, I think you can forget about him.”

The crowd echoed back: “Lyin’ Ted! Lyin’ Ted! Lyin’ Ted!”

“He is lyin’ Ted,” said Mr Trump. “I came up with the idea. But you have to spell it right. It’s L-Y-I-N apostrophe. Lyin’ Ted. The Bible held high, he puts it down then he lies. He lies like crazy.”

Mr Trump insisted that he wins the evangelical vote over Mr Cruz because he is a “New York straight shooter”.

The Republican then dismissed Republican Ohio governor John Kasich as winning just "one point" versus Mr Trump’s "33 points".

“He won’t leave [the presidential campaign], but it’s ok, he’s a nice guy.”
