Katy Perry and John Legend among famous faces to congratulate Hillary Clinton’s historic victory

As Hillary Clinton seemed set to shatter that ultimate glass ceiling by securing the nomination for the Democratic party, a host of well-known faces were quick to offer their congratulations and support.

Ms Clinton tweeted several pictures to suggest the historical significance of the evening as the results of the final batch of democratic state primaries rolled in.

Famous faces quickly followed suit on social media, adding the candidate’s campaign hashtag “I’mWithHer”.

Singer Katy Perry wrote: “A lot of little girls are in bed right now dreaming for the first time, without limits. You broke the mould, Hillary Clinton."

Actor and model Jaime King added: “THANK YOU for letting me & all women be with you & dream BIG!”

Ms Clinton often spoke of how she had been accused of “playing the woman card” and retorted, “If fighting for women's health care and paid family leave and equal pay is playing the woman card, then deal me in.”

Chat show host Ellen DeGeneres wrote on social media: “I’ve never been prouder to have a woman card.”

Ms Clinton attended a celebrity-packed fundraising concert on Monday evening in California including performances from Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, John Legend and Stevie Wonder.

Tickets cost up to $250 per ticket.

Mr Legend said that Ms Clinton was the first candidate to address mass incarceration and the need to get away from policies that “criminalize poverty”.

Bernie Sanders had indicated he will continue to fight against Ms Clinton until the last democratic primary in Washington DC on 14 June, and insisted he is not “sexist” just because he refuses to quit the race.

He also has many famous followers, including Rosario Dawson, Susan Sarandon, Spike Lee and 90-year-old actor Dick Van Dyke, who wrote in a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter, “We as a society urgently need to stop worrying so much about big banks and big businesses and start worrying more about people."

Many celebrities were quick to mock the Republican nominee Donald Trump, who said this week that he was one of the people who “broke the glass ceiling” for women in the construction industry.

At the Clinton concert, Cher said: “When I watch Trump, I just want to blow my brains out."

Meryl Streep covered herself in fake tan to make fun of the businessman, while actor Minnie Driver also tweeted a hashtag which alluded to Mr Trump’s plan to build a wall along the US-Mexican border.

On Monday evening after senator Sanders lost out to Ms Clinton in New Jersey, he said that he would “welcome Bernie Sanders supporters with open arms”.

Model Chrissy Teigen wrote: “If you’re a Bernie supporter voting for Trump because Bernie is out, holy sh*t, I hate you."
