Donald Trump is 'dangerous and sick of mind' and should be removed from office, says former Republican senator

Donald Trump should be removed from office because he is mentally ill, a former Republican senator has said.

Gordon Humphrey, who represented New Hampshire between 1979 and 1990, said the US President is “sick of mind” and called for members of Congress to force him out.

In a letter sent to several New Hampshire Democrat senators and representatives, Mr Humphrey said Mr Trump is “dangerous”, “seriously sick” and could cause the deaths of millions of people.

“Donald Trump is impaired by a seriously sick psyche,” he wrote in the letter, which was shared with WMUR. “His sick mind and reckless conduct could consume the lives of millions. The threat of nuclear war is steeply on the rise."

Claiming the Commander-in-Chief is “sick of mind, impetuous, arrogant, belligerent and dangerous”, he added: "Donald Trump should be relieved of the powers of the presidency at the earliest date."

“Serious crises are bearing down on us. We cannot leave our national security and our families’ safety in the hands of a President whose poor judgement, belligerence, vindictiveness and reckless impetuosity constitute an indictment of his mental health.

“Donald Trump is seriously sick. He is dangerous. As a citizen, a former US Senator and 12-year member of the (Senate) Armed Services Committee, I urge you to act at once. This is an emergency.”

The claims come amid widespread criticism of Mr Trump over his response to threats made by North Korea. As tensions continued to mount, the President ratcheted up his rhetoric by vowing to inflict “fire and fury the like of which the world has never seen” on the communist state if it does not back down.

"President Trump's threat to rain down 'fire and fury' on North Korea is like pouring gasoline on a fire," Mr Humphrey wrote. "It's crazy."

The former senator asked New Hampshire’s representatives to support a bill, tabled by Democrats in the House of Representatives, that would make it easier to remove a sitting US president if they are deemed to be mentally unfit for office.

The legislation would establish an Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity with responsibility for investigating whether a president "is temporarily or permanently impaired by physical illness or disability, mental illness, mental deficiency, or alcohol or drug use to the extent that the person lacks sufficient understanding or capacity to execute the powers and duties of the office”.

The proposal currently has the backing of almost 30 representatives.

Mr Humphrey is a longstanding critic of Mr Trump. Last year he called the billionaire businessman a “sociopath” with a “severe personality disorder”. After initially backing John Kasich for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, he later endorsed Hillary Clinton for president, despite her being a Democrat.
