Donald Trump’s lawyer has admitted Robert Mueller may seek fresh answers from the US president over alleged obstruction of justice.

Rudy Giuliani told CNN further questions for Mr Trump were “not on the table, but could be put back on the table” after the president submitted written answers to queries from the special counsel earlier this week.

The president answered questions surrounding alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump team during the 2016 presidential campaign, but refused to answer questions about issues of obstruction while in office, citing executive privilege.

“We answered every question they asked that was legitimately pre-election and focused on Russia,” Mr Giuliani said in an interview at the time. “Nothing post-election. And we've told them we're not going to do that.”

On Wednesday, however, Mr Giuliani revealed the president’s legal team is willing to answer follow-up questions from Mr Mueller and his investigators.

"We'll consider them and answer them if necessary, relevant and legal," Mr Giuliani said. "If it was something that would be helpful, relevant.”

Mr Trump signed the submission to Mr Mueller on Tuesday before he left Washington to spend the Thanksgiving holiday in Florida, a person familiar with the matter said.

Mr Mueller, a former head of the FBI, was tasked to probe “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation” into possible collusion between Mr Trump's campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.

US intelligence agencies have concluded Russia interfered in the presidential election by undermining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, in order to tip it towards Mr Trump.

Mr Trump has denied any collusion with Moscow and Russia has said it did not meddle in the election.

Among the topics Mr Trump addressed was a June 2016 meeting between the president's son, Donald Trump Jr, other members of Mr Trump's campaign team and a group of Russians, the person familiar with the matter said.

Mr Trump has denied knowing about the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians, who promised damaging information about Ms Clinton.

Mr Mueller has already brought charges against some former Trump aides, including his former campaign chairman and his former national security adviser, as well as a number of Russian individuals and entities.

Mr Giuliani said in a statement the president provided “unprecedented cooperation” with the probe over the past year and a half, noting more than 30 White House-related witnesses had been questioned and 1.4 million pages of material turned over before the president responded to the pre-election questions in writing.

He added “much of what has been asked raised serious constitutional issues and was beyond the scope of a legitimate inquiry”.
