Pamela Knox was driving along when suddenly her car started to slip into a hole - and kept on slipping.

The car ended up underneath a spouting water main that authorities think may have caused the hole in north-west Ohio.

Mrs Knox surprisingly escaped after rescue crew placed a ladder in the hole. Police say Mrs Knox did not appear hurt but was shocked and taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Sgt Joe Heffernan of Toledo police said Mrs Knox saw the vehicle in front of her start to slip into the hole but drove beyond it, but she was unable to avoid it.

He estimated the hole was at least 10ft deep.

Officials used a crane to pull the car from the hole. Repairs to the road are expected to take days.
