Officials in Wyoming have said a woman who was bitten by a bat has died after contracting what is believed to be the state’s first case of rabies.

Reports said a 77-year-old woman from the town of Lander became infected after being bitten in August.

She began showing symptoms weeks later and was treated at a Lander hospital. She was recently transferred to a Salt Lake City-area hospital, where officials say she died on Saturday, the Daily Ranger newspaper reported.

The woman has not been identified.

Symptoms of rabies often include weakness, paralysis or behavioral changes. The Associated Press said health officiasl say there are only one or two human cases in the United States each year.
