India's governing party yesterday sacked two top officials tainted by corruption scandals that have embarrassed the country as it aspires to superpower status. The Congress Party said it was removing the party's parliament secretary, Suresh Kalmadi, who was in charge of the Commonwealth Games, and Ashok Chavan, chief minister of Maharashtra, because of a housing scam in Mumbai.
Congress has also ordered high-level investigations into both sets of allegations. The sackings followed weeks of outcry by India's nationalist opposition.
