The sheer scale of the destruction caused by Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal has been revealed in new aerial footage taken by local television.

The video taken from a helicopter captures a bird’s eye view of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu which was devastated by the quake over the weekend.

In the clips from the Nepalese channel Kantipul Live, remains of hundreds of flattened homes can be seen littering the capital, with roads out of the city jammed by people trying to flee.

In the video, the rubble of Kathmandu’s nine-storey landmark Darahara tower can be seen after it collapsed on Saturday.

The footage comes as international rescue workers arrived in Kathmandu today to help Nepal’s already stretched emergency services that are struggling to cope with the sheer scale of wreckage caused by the biggest earthquake experienced in the country since 1934.

So far the death count stands at more than 3,700 but it is expected to rise further as rescue teams continue to make their way through the mountains of rubble left by the disaster.
