A british soldier was killed in an explosion in Afghanistan yesterday as he provided cover for soldiers returning from a patrol.

The soldier, from 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment, which is serving with the 40 Commando Royal Marines Battle Group, was killed near the Waterloo military base in Sangin, Helmand Province. His next of kin have been told, but his name was not released.

His death took to 282 the number of British service personnel who have died since the start of operations in Afghanistan in 2001. Lt-Col James Carr-Smith, of Task Force Helmand, said: "He was providing protection to his fellow soldiers. His actions will not be forgotten."
