Australian MP wears bin bag in response to her critics’ ‘sexist garbage’

An Australian MP has posted a video of herself wearing a bin bag in response to the “sexist garbage” levelled at her by her critics.

Nicolle Flint, the MP for Boothby in South Australia, posted the video on Twitter in which she took aim at an article in regional newspaper, The Advertiser.

The article, written by ABC broadcaster Peter Goes, criticised her for wearing stiletto heels, pearl earrings, her “pearly smile”, “tight black pants that show [her] ankles”, and a variety of coloured jackets.

“I’ve put up with a lot as a woman in politics,” Ms Flint says at the start of the video.

“People charged a creepy old man with stalking me. My campaign office was vandalised, calling me a skank and a prostitute who charged A$60 an hour.”

After detailing the criticisms against her appearance, Ms Flint takes off her coat, revealing a black bin bag she is wearing over her trousers.

“So Mr Goers, what I want to know is – what should a woman in politics wear? How about a garbage bag to match your rubbish views?” she asks.

In her tweet, she said: “Sick of sexist garbage? I am, which is why I’m calling out ABC Adelaide’s Peter Goers rubbish views about my appearance, published in yesterday’s The Advertiser Sunday Mail.

“It’s time women in public life are judged on what they stand for, not what they look like.”

It comes after US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made an extraordinary speech in the House of Representatives condemning misogyny and violent language against women after a Republican lawmaker was accused of calling her a “f***ing b****”.

Ms Flint’s video was praised by many people on Twitter, including ABC News reporter Jane Norman, who said: “This. Is. Fantastic. So pleased to see this kind of sexist rubbish, finally, being called out.”
