Australian underworld figure dies in prison fight
An Australian underworld figure died after a prison fight the same day that newspapers reported police payments for his daughter's school.
Victoria state police said Carl Williams suffered head injuries in today's fight and died after going into cardiac arrest. The statement did not disclose any known motive but said the other inmate was in police custody.
Williams was convicted in 2007 and serving a life term for killing three rival crime figures.
News Ltd. newspapers uncovered that Victoria Police paid A$8,000 for Williams' daughter to attend a prestigious private school.
Lawyer Rob Stary said Williams expressed concern that morning about his daughter's safety in light of the article.
