The tensions over the Waco tragedy are such that Ann Richards, the Texas Governor, telephoned the US Attorney-General, Janet Reno, in an apparent attempt to remind her that investigations are led by the Texas Rangers and not bureaucrats in the Department of Justice, Phil Reeves reports from Waco.

Among the issues upsetting state officials are claims by the department that some of the corpses of cult members had recent bullet wounds, encouraging speculation that they either committed suicide or were shot by Koresh or his henchmen.
