Calcutta was virtually paralysed by an opposition strike in protest against the police shooting of 13 demonstrators, and the city was braced for possible violence, Reuter reports from Calcutta.

Shops closed for the 24-hour stoppage called by the state branch of Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao's Congress Party, which is the opposition in West Bengal.
