JESSORE, BANGLADESH (AFP) - A man was killed and 100 people injured in clashes with police before two Bangladeshi ministers persuaded Muslims to abandon their 'long march' to Ayodhya, northern India. 'The marchers brought one man dead and he was hit by a bullet,' a doctor at the district hospital said.

He said 20 people were being treated, and ambulances were bringing more from Laugani, where police earlier fired shots to stop marchers from pushing through a barricade.

The 'long march' aimed to reach the site of Babri Mosque, in Ayodhya, which was demolished by Hindu militants last month. The marchers abandoned a plan to cross into India after the incident and 'offered prayers before turning back' to Jessore town, police said.
