Berlin interior minister pledges investigation into NSU neo-Nazi case
Friday 14 September 2012
Berlin's top security official says he has a "responsibility to the victims" of a murderous band of neo-Nazis to find out whether it is true that information on them was not passed along by city police.
Berlin interior minister Frank Henkel said today media reports that a city police informant provided tips about the group's whereabouts that were not shared with agencies actively seeking them "does not shine a favorable light on our security agencies."
Der Spiegel reports the informant gave details on the so-called NSU from 2000 to 2005 primarily "based on hearsay" and it was not clear how good the information was.
The NSU allegedly killed 10 people from 2000 to 2007 while its members, two now dead and one in custody, were being sought for other crimes.
