Brazilian striker Wellington's racist abuse during football match in Romania leaves him in tears

Brazilian footballer Wellington has spoken out about the "incredible" racist abuse he received from opposition fans during a match in Romania.

The Concordia Chiajna striker accused Rapid Bucharest supporters of throwing a banana at him during the Romanian league match on Friday.

TV footage showed a number of supporters making monkey gestures and racial slurs against the forward during the game.

Wellington, who reportedly burst into tears at the end of the match, told local media on Saturday: "It's incredible what happened... my wife and my child were in the stands.

"I wanted to get out of the field, I'm not a monkey."

The striker went on to say: "I told the referee (about the incidents) and he gave me a yellow card."

He added: "Those who did that are idiots, I hope the federation will do something about it."

The scenes have caused outrage in the Black Sea state, where less than two months ago champions Steaua Bucharest were hit with a partial stadium ban by UEFA following racist behaviour from their fans during a Champions League match in July.

The Romanian football authorities were not immediately available for comment, Reuters have reported.

In an extraordinary statement, Rapid boss Marian Rada said: "Was he crying? Don't you see what's happening in theatres? Maybe Wellington should have cried because he didn't score."

He went on to say: "How do we know it was a Rapid fan? Maybe a banana just slipped out of someone's hand in the stands."

Meanwhile, Romanian police have said an investigation has been launched after a Rapid Bucharest fan entered the stadium in Chiajna with a flag with Nazi symbols printed on it.

Police said they will use video evidence to track the offender who could face between six months and five years in prison.
